Victorian Ash is a eucalyptus species native to Victoria and southern New South Wales. It grows straight, mills cleanly, and produces a timber that is naturally dense and durable — properties that come from the timber itself, not from added treatment. It is widely used in Australian furniture making, flooring, and joinery for the same reasons it works well outdoors: it holds its shape, takes a finish well, and ages gracefully.

 

Why Victorian Ash outdoors

Unlike pine, Victorian Ash doesn't require pressure treatment to handle outdoor conditions. It is naturally resistant to weathering and moves less with temperature and humidity changes — which means fewer cracks, fewer gaps between boards over time, and a table that stays looking right for longer. It is not immune to weathering, but it handles it on its own terms.

 

Fasteners

Hot-dipped galvanised bolts throughout. Hardwood picnic tables require properly bolted A-frame joints — screws alone won't carry the load or hold tight in the denser timber over time. Hot-dipped galvanising is the correct spec for outdoor structural hardware: thick, bonded coating that won't flake or corrode in Melbourne's wet winters.

Victorian Ash hardwood is the only timber option on this page. There is no untreated/treated split — hardwood doesn't need it.

Victorian Ash takes stain particularly well: the fine, consistent grain means even coverage with no blotchy patches, and the pale natural colour of the timber lets the finish read true rather than fighting with the base tone.

The most popular finish on the hardwood table is clear gloss varnish — it lets the natural Vic Ash grain do the work without adding colour. The second most popular is the walnut stain with black legs, which pushes the warm tones of the timber and gives the table a contemporary Australian furniture-maker look.

Umbrella hole

A 50mm umbrella hole can be added to the centre of the table top, selected as a yes/no option in the product dropdown. Clean-drilled and sanded before finishing — the stain or varnish seals the edge. Compatible with all sizes and all finish options.
